Fuel Adjustments on the Utility Bill

A fuel adjustment is a charge on a utility that reflects the changing cost of fuel or electricity. It is known as a Fuel Adjustment Clause (FAC).

How it works

  • The FAC is used to account for fluctuations in the cost of fuel in purchased power.
  • The FAC is adjusted periodically to reflect changes in the cost of fuel.
  • When the cost of fuel increases, the FAC increases, and when the cost of fuel decreases, the FAC Decreases.

Why it's Important

  • The FAC helps utilities recover costs when fuel prices increase, and pass those savings on to consumer when fuel prices decrease.
  • The FAC helps utilities avoid having to change base rates frequently.
